LPS Coral Care, All Corals

Torch coral, also known as Euphyllia glabrescens, is a beautiful and popular species of coral that can add a unique and vibrant touch to your reef tank. However, to keep this coral healthy and thriving, it requires specific care and attention. In this blog, we'll go over the steps necessary to care for torch coral in a reef tank.

Lighting

Torch coral requires moderate to high lighting. The ideal range for this coral is between 150 to 250 PAR. PAR stands for Photosynthetically Active Radiation and is a measurement of the amount of light energy that can be used for photosynthesis. It's essential to ensure that the lighting is consistent, as fluctuations can cause stress to the coral.

Water flow

Torch coral requires moderate to high water flow. A good rule of thumb is to aim for water flow around 10 times the volume of the tank. For example, if you have a 50-gallon tank, the flow should be around 500 gallons per hour. Be sure to position the coral where it can receive adequate water flow, but avoid placing it directly in the path of a powerhead or other strong water flow.

Water quality

Maintaining good water quality is essential for the health of your torch coral. Parameters such as salinity, pH, temperature, and nutrient levels should be within the acceptable range. The ideal salinity range for a reef tank is between 1.023 and 1.025, and the pH should be between 8.0 and 8.4. Water temperature should be between 75 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep in mind that any fluctuations in these parameters can cause stress to the coral.

Feeding

While torch coral doesn't require regular feeding, it can benefit from occasional feedings. You can feed it small pieces of shrimp, clam, or fish. It's best to feed the coral at night when it's more likely to have its feeding tentacles extended. Be sure not to overfeed, as this can cause water quality issues.

Placement

When placing the torch coral in your reef tank, it's important to ensure that it has adequate space to expand. Torch coral can grow quite large and will need room to extend its tentacles fully. Avoid placing it near other corals, as it can sting them with its long sweeper tentacles, which can extend several inches beyond the coral's base.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential for the health of your torch coral. This includes weekly water changes, testing water parameters, and keeping equipment clean. Be sure to keep an eye out for any signs of stress, such as closed polyps or tissue recession. If you notice any issues, take action immediately to address the problem.

In conclusion, caring for torch coral in a reef tank requires specific attention to lighting, water flow, water quality, feeding, placement, and maintenance. By following these steps, you can keep your torch coral healthy and thriving, adding a beautiful and vibrant touch to your reef tank.
